Fervo’s thesis has always been borrowed from shale: drill enough wells and each one gets faster and cheaper. The record backs it. Its first commercial horizontal well, at Project Red in 2022, took 70 days to reach 11,220 feet with 3,250-foot laterals at 350 °F. Cape Phase I moved to 5,000-foot laterals and 400 °F, is fully drilled, and is on track to send first power to the grid later this year.
Sawtooth 7 is the ninth well drilled for Cape Phase II with the 3.0 design — 7,500-foot laterals, 8 5/8” casing, a 460 °F resource. It went from spud to total depth in 21 days, matching the fastest well of Phase I despite being deeper, hotter and longer. Phase II is a 400 MW development due to deliver power in 2028. CEO Tim Latimer said he expects the 3.0 design to yield substantially more megawatts per well, and that the company remains committed to reaching $3,000 per kilowatt.
