For most of its history, geothermal only worked where the earth’s heat reached the surface on its own, in volcanic areas like Iceland or Kenya. That geography confined the industry to a handful of countries. Project Red, in the Nevada desert, starts from a different premise: the heat is everywhere, and the constraint was never geology but drilling.
The plant, developed by the startup Fervo Energy, draws heat from thousands of metres down and converts it into continuous electricity, with no dependence on sun or wind and no carbon emissions in operation.
